ANNA BOLENA – Liceu, Barcelona, Fevereiro de 2011

(review in English below)

Anna Bolena - Liceu, Barcelona, February 2011

The alternative cast kept the quality of the opera!

About a month after seeing the exceptional performance of of Anna Bolena in Barcelona with the main cast, I had the opportunity to return to the Liceu opera house and see the same opera with the alternative cast, one of the so-called " funciones populares ", corresponding to much cheaper performances and, theoretically, with more modest casts.

Those who do not know the Liceu may think that these casts are a second-rate alternative. It is utterly false and this performance just proved it. Indeed, it was another performance of great quality. Although without the two absolutely exceptional artists of the first cast (Edita Gruberova and Elina Garanca), the singers featured high quality and balanced interpretations.

Maria Pia Piscitelli was a very competent Anna Bolena, with good stage presence and vocally flawless. Her lyric belcanto soprano was harmonious, strong and convincing, maintaining the same quality throughout the entire performance.

Giovanna Seymour was played with great artistry by Sonia Ganassi, Italian mezzo who was also in very good. The voice is beautiful, well audible and secure in all registers.

Simón Orfila, Spanish bass-baritone, was a remarkable Enrico VIII. The voice was firm, beautiful tone and always audible over the orchestra.

American tenor Gergory Kunde was a very powerful Riccardo Percy. With a tone of considerable beauty, he was a belcanto tenor of great potency and quality, although he missed some lyricism. he was incomparably superior in every aspect to Jose Bros, who sang the role at first cast.

Finally Marina Rodriguez-Cusi was a Smeton of great quality, both vocal and artistic.

Despite being the alternative cast, the quality of the show was first class.

  2. Caro FanaticoUm,

  3. Thank you for the review and nice pictures. Seems like interesting staging. The light is wonderful! I hope to visit Liceu someday.

Bellini once planed to compose an opera about Anna Bolena, but changed his mind in oder not to compete his friend Donizetti who already made a great success with Anna Bolena. In stead of Anna Bolena, composed Bellini La Sonnambula which I've seen in Vienna last Saturday. A great friendship!

I bet you speak Italian fluently. How lucky! Most of operas are written in Italian.
