A VALQUÍRIA (DIE WALKÜRE), Bayerische Staatsoper, Munique, Janeiro de 2013 / Munich, January 2013

 (review in English below)

Die Walküre is the second opera of the Nibelung Ring cycle of Richard Wagner. The staging was by Andreas Kriegenburg.

The performance begins with a battle in the forest where Siegmund participates. The stage rises and appears Hunding's hut, where Siegmund arrives. There is a huge tree in the middle , where the sword is stuck. Sieglinde welcomes him with some distance. The supernumeraries have lights on their hands that illuminate the items they carry, including the glass of water that Sieglinde offers Siegmund. At the back of the stage we see the fallen heroes corpses being washed. Hunding, Sieglinde's husband, arrives and tells Siegmund that they will fight next day.
Sieglinde gives her husband a snoozer. Siegmund and Sieglinde, passionate, find that they are twins and start a love relationship. Notung, the sword, which had been driven into the ash by Wotan, is removed by Siegmund.

In the 2nd act Walhall is a palace with servants dressed up, where Fricka criticizes Wotan and "forces him" to order his favorite valkyrie, Brünhilde, to kill Siegmund, because of his incestuous relationship. The only scenic objects are the spear and a large painting on the back wall of the stage, and a desk. Everything else is made up of supernumeraries..
Brünhilde finds Siegmund and Sieglinde, and is impressed by Siegmund’s dedication to his wife. She decides to disobey the order of her father. Everything happens with the stage elevated. The stage goes back down when Siegmund is killed by Hunding and Hunding by Wotan.
The beginning of the 3rd act is one of the most controversial moments of the production. A group of girls dance frantically among the dead heroes, with no music and apparently no sense, for about 10 minutes. There is a great discontent in the theater and the public manifests loud. Then the music starts and everything calms down immediately. The Valkyries have the reins in their hands and the sopernumeraries on the back part of the stage, assume the figure of horses.
Wotan when scolding her daughter Brunhilde is violent, cold and distant. She is pushed into the back of the stage and ordered to be in a deep sleep on a rock. When she asks his father that only a hero will wake her up, they both know (and the public too) that the hero will be Siegfried, yet unborn, because we hear his leitmotif.
When singing the farewell, Wotan approaches Brunhilde, kisses her and both in voice as on stage, he exudes a touching sense of compassion.
In the final scene, Brünhilde, asleep, is surrounded by the sacred fire, represented by supernumeraries holding a rope that burns, followed by images of fire across the whole stage.

Regarding singers, a wonder:

Simon O'Neill, NeoZealand tenor, offered a striking interpretation of Siegmund. He has a beautiful timbre and projects his voice very well. He was very emotional The calls for Wälse were of excellent quality, but he was less well in more lyrical parts, eg in the Winterstürme, when he was barely heard. He ended first act exhausted. I feared a premature death, but it happened at the right time, in the 2nd act.Petra Lang, German soprano, was a fabulous Sieglinde. The role is perfect for her. She was vocally blameless, both on medium and top records and she could always be heard above the orchestra. Her acting was very redible.

Hunding was sung by German bass Hans-Peter König. He was firm and authoritative. The singer has a great beautiful voice and was very convincing on stage.

Wotan was interpreted by Polish bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny. He was one of the best of the night. The voice is great, with many interesting nuances and the singer has projected it perfectly. In the 3rd act he was fabulous in the dialogues with his daughter Brünhilde and, especially, in farewell part. His figure and the agility on also contributed to the construction of an excellent character.

Again, Austrian mezzo Elisabeth Kulman was an overwhelming Fricka. I already highlited on the text on Das Rhinegold the exceptional quality of the singer, who consolidated her technical qualities in this performance.
Fabulous!
Also German soprano Evelyn Herlitzius was a great Brünhilde. The role is very demanding (as if all the others were not!) and she was very convincing. In top notes she, occasionally, shouted more than sung, but she had an excellent interpretation, well above what do've heard Herlitzius in other Wagnerian roles. Finally the other Valkyries were fine when in chorus, while there have been notable qualitative differences when they sang individually.

Partilha do desagrado do público?
