A FILHA DO REGIMENTO / LA FILLE DU RÉGIMENT – Teatro de São Carlos, Novembro de 2013

(review in english below)

THE DAUGHTER OF THE REGIMENT / LA FILLE DU RÉGIMENT - São Carlos Theatre , November 2013

The Daughter of the Regiment (La Fille du Régiment) is a comic opera by G. Donizetti with libretto by J. H. Saint - Georges and F. Bayard. The plot can be read here.

Not being one of my favorite Donizetti’s operas, I have seen it a few times because when it is well staged and performed by musicians and singers of great quality, it becomes a very pleasant performance. And at present, there is a top quality Tonio, Juan Diego Florez, who can excite anyone.

In the current situation I think it was a risk that the San Carlos Opera House took to stage this opera, particularly given the requirement of top quality singers able to interpret the soloist roles.

The staging by Mário Redondo, based on a toy box, is simple, unimaginative, but nothing shocking and perfectly suited to the times of scarce resources that we live.

Maestro Rui Pinheiro conducted the Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa and Chorus of the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos .

Soprano Cristiana Oliveira was Marie. In the beginning she was barely heard and the top notes were a little wild. However, along the performance, she greatly improved and made a very acceptable character for the high demands of the role. A pleasant surprise.

The best of the night was baritone Luis Rodrigues as Sulpice. He interpreted the character at the highest level, as the best I have seen. Well placed and powerful voice, beautiful tone, excellent stage presence. He redeemed himself completely from the problem that he had a few weeks ago when he became voiceless on stage. He showed that he is one of the best national singers.

The Marquise of Berkenfield was interpreted by mezzo Patricia Quinta. She was well without dazzle.

Also João Oliveira made a decent Hortensius, although the role is small.

And I leave to the end the Italian tenor Alessandro Luciano who was a Tonio to forget. The singer has neither voice, nor figure, nor stage qualities for the role. It was a painful and distressing interpretation, in contrast to the other singers.

    1. Dear Giulia,
I regret to inform that, despite your wise and kind advice, I will go on seing opera and commenting on what I see and hear in this blog. Perhaps I will reach the status of having enough experience in this "world", not to mention intelligence and sensitivity. Grazie mille.

    2. Dear Giulia,
It is really a pity to have an Italian tenor performing a lot worst than we all want our sensory apparatus to sense. It is also comprehensible for us that you can’t accept it by a national duty of protection and care. However, our experience in this opera “world” gave us the capacity to know what a good voice is. What I really can’t understand is the reason you can’t argue anything in his favor. You must try!
Nevertheless, we all are grateful for your encouraging commentaries, and ask you to continuing be a so rational and simultaneously emotional. You are probably the perfect match and the most intelligent and experience person on opera world, so it was really an honor.
We will try to continue online despite our hobby bother you, and we invite you to explore a little bit more our blog. As you will se we are going to some interesting opera houses and do comments on what we see with great pleasure!
AH! I can assure you that we all here all intelligent and sensitive enough to be considered one homo sapiens sapiens specimen.
      Best wishes!

  3. I will try to explaine to you, in easy and understandable words, what i have seen and why i say that your way to conceive the Opera World is absolutly wrong.
It is not a problem of nationality, as you have said; the problem is to sing well.

Mrs. Oliveira: nice voice, nice figure. Unfortunately the concept of intonation is something that she doesn't know at all. The most part of the opera she was under intonation.
Let's talk about the first acute and the sovracuti? This is not SING this is SCREAM! The voice has no focus.
The aria of the second act was good, but not the last note....
Musicality was only acceptable, but nothing more than scolastic and cold.
Probably she has to sing another repertoire...( i think she could be better like Violetta,Juliette,Marguerite...without put sovracuti....)

Mr. Rodriguez: he has a good real bariton voice, and the role doesn't give him all the possibility to show his capacity. But what we can say is that his voice sounds like "Old" even if he is not. Probably he push too much and his vibrato is large. Yes his voice is powerful, but he is very "short" and it is clear that he has problem with high notes.
He is a very good actor and i liked his job on the scene.

Mr. Luciano: He has, for me and not just because i am italian, a nice timbre, a wonderful fraseggio and a impressive musicality.
If sometimes the volume is not so big, for me it doesn't matter. ( You have written about Florez, which in terms of volume leaves much to be desired...i have tried to hear him a lot of time....Elisir in MET, elisir in Torino, Rigoletto in Dresda, Puritani in Madrid....In other cases i really liked him like in Mathilde di Shabran in Pesaro, the Cenerentola in Barcellona....)
The intonation was always good, and the sound was always homogeneous. The high notes never shouted ( only one high Do i felt not really good ).
In stage was amazing and funny, even if he is not Brad Pit ( one of the problem of the Opera world....the physical appearance is now more important than the voice ...)
Of course i think he is not the best Tonio i have ever heard - i was in Paris with Alfredo Kraus and M.Campanella - but he is already young and i think he has all the possibility and instruments to do better in the future.

The Mezzosprano Mrs. Quinta was in the normal range of the singers Who usually do this kind of roles.

Mr. Oliveira has been a nice Hortensius.

The Conductor M. Pinheiro has been absolutly irrilevant...no colours, no feelings and sometimes pushed the orchestra too much, like in the first scenes. But i think he has a good quality: he try to favors the singers and it is not frequent.

The stage direction of Mario Redondo has been traditional even if a little bit poor.

    1. Dear Giulia,
Thank you very much for your detailed and informative text. I am sure our readers will enjoy reading it. It is good that we do not all like the same. Diversity is richness. I could argue why I have a different opinion, but I will not do it. Once again, Grazie mille.

  4. Caro Fanático_Um,

Seja como for, achei desadequado.

Abraço do LesAmisdeLaMusique! :)
